Ragunan Zoo is a tourist attraction located in Jakarta, precisely Pasar Minggu area, South Jakarta. Zoo or often abbreviated people with the title bonbin is where animals are kept in an environment that has been engineered (artificial), and displayed to visitors. The zoo starts from the cages containing a collection of wild animals called menagerie.

In the 2nd century BC, China's Mahaani Tanki built a deer house, and Aja Wen of Zhou has a zoo of Ling-Yu (Garden of Intelligence) with an area of ​​600 hectares. In ancient times many famous people who also like to keep animals, such as King Solomon of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah Unity, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and King Semirami of Assyria.

In the 4th century BC, almost all major cities in Greece have Zoos. In Rome, the emperors had a collection of private animals to research and pitted in the arena. Now, in addition to being a place of recreation, the zoo serves as a place for research and conservation of endangered animals.

Ragunan Zoo which has an area of ​​140 hectares was established in 1864. Its existence began with the establishment of the first zoo in Indonesia, Planten En Dierentuin in Cikini, Central Jakarta in 1864.

At that time, Planten En Dierentuin was administered by the Flora and Fauna Batavian Lovers Association (Cuturule Vereniging Planten en Dierentuin at Batavia). The legendary painter Raden Saleh can not be separated from the history of this zoo. He grants 10 hectares of land to the zoo.

In 1949, Planten En Dierentuin changed its name to Cikini Zoo. In 1964, exactly a century of celebration and as the city of Jakarta progressed, the zoo was moved to Ragunan area, South Jakarta by the Government of DKI Jakarta. This is also done to ensure the life of the animals.

On June 22, 1966, the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Ali Sadikin, inaugurated this zoo. Ragunan Zoo is also known as Ragunan Wildlife Park. The zoo now has a collection of about 295 species of animals and 4,040 specimens, on 140 hectares of land.

Various collections at this zoo are not only from Indonesia, but also from various countries. For example, tonde deer (axis axis erxleben). The deer are from India and Sri Lanka. Initially, the deer was brought to the Bogor Palace by Thomas Stanford Raffles in about 1814.

In addition, there are various kinds of poultry, primates, snakes, bears, elephants, camels, hippos, bulls, tigers, lions, crocodiles, and others. On September 19, 2005, Ragunan Zoo was closed because the animals that exist in there are infected with bird flu. But, re-opened to the public on October 11, 2005.

Success in the breeding program becomes the specialty of this zoo. Successful breeding in this zoo includes the captivity of Sumatran tigers, white tigers, orangutans, pythons, dragons, and some bird species, such as cassowaries, cockatoos, parrots. The air is cool and calm is also another perkny. This is because the zoo has a large lake and surrounded by about 50,000 shady trees.

Inside the Ragunan Zoo there is a primate center named the Primate Center Schmutzer (PPS). To get into it, we just pay the ticket IDR 5,000. Schmutzer Primate Center features a variety of primates with different ambience. There is also a primate museum to add insight into children. We can see gorillas, white apes, hoops, gibbons, and various other primate species.

Schmutzer Primate Center was first opened in August 2002. Since its opening it until July 2004, recorded primate rides have been visited around 830. 239 people. Its presence has helped to raise the image of the Ragunan Zoo by changing the public view of the zoo.

In addition, there is also the Orang Utan World. We enter a long, dark tunnel that looks like a cave. In each part is separated by ropes such as tree roots.
